Mr. Douglas Mwonzora - MDC T |
The Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe has rejected the request made by the President of the MDCT, Mr. Douglas Mwonzora, to halt this year's elections, citing issues with the delimitation report prepared by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
Chief Justice Luke Malaba, presiding over the Constitutional Court's seven-judge panel, stated that Mr. Mwonzora's documents were not properly written and declined the request.
Mr. Mwonzora's lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, has stated that they will continue with the case and appeal to the High Court.
Additionally, the court disallowed human rights lawyer, Mr. Jeremiah Bamu, from being heard in the case as a friend of the court, prompting concerns from Mr. Bamu's legal team about the implications on future cases.
Mr. Mwonzora had requested that the elections be postponed due to the Electoral Commission's inadequate demarcation of district boundaries for councilor and parliamentary elections.
The court's decision means that the elections will proceed using the current ZEC document, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa anticipated to announce the election date soon.
The public will have only two days to register to vote once the date is set.
